Our volunteers are a critical and integral component of the Heroes and Horses program. You are a vital support in the deeply healing journey that begins at the Double H Ranch. Your presence as a volunteer enables the Heroes and Horses program to operate smoothly while acting as tribute to the value of each class participant through the simple act of showing up in service. You must be flexible, friendly, willing and able to work long hours on your feet, and lead with integrity in every action taken on behalf of the Heroes and Horses program.
As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to stay on the Double H Ranch in Montana during your selected service week, experiencing the serenity and beauty that is found in every corner of this transcendental place. You will be invited to participate with staff in several modalities that are utilized with the program participants. If desired, there will be time built into the daily schedule for your own self reflection and revival to begin.
Volunteer applications for new volunteers will open February 15, 2026.
As a Kitchen Staff volunteer you will primarily be working in the Double H Chow Hall kitchen assisting our Executive Chef, Jim, in preparing the Anti-Inflammatory Farmacy menu for participants, staff, volunteers and guests. Depending on the week, we serve between thirty and fifty people at each meal so this role becomes pivotal in the success of our nutrition program. You will be chopping, slicing, and dicing, as well as taking part in service and clean up before and after meals. No official kitchen experience is required, simply a willingness to show up, be present, and work alongside others sharing a heart for healing.
Kitchen Staff volunteers are also responsible for participant laundry each day as well as other housekeeping tasks. While being in the kitchen is certainly its fair share of work, Jim keeps the environment light and fun. The Chow Hall becomes the heartbeat of the program and you will be witness to life altering transformations among those who dine with us. Lifelong friendships form in the Double H kitchen and the fulfillment that you will feel cannot be understated.
As a Ranch Maintenance Crew volunteer you will be working primarily outside. This role is for those people who enjoy the physical labor of yardwork and ranch chores. You will be helping with everything from weedeating and mowing to cleaning manure from the paddocks using ranch equipment. You will work closely with our Facilitiy Manager, Scott, to accomplish the many tasks that keep the Double H Ranch both functional and beautiful.
Experience with ranch work, fencing, and common hand and power tools is preferred for this role, but the only requirement is a willingness to do what’s necessary. This position is physically demanding but you will end each day with a sense of accomplishment that can’t be duplicated behind a desk.
