500 MILES MUSTANGS

Following years of service to veterans, these horses are ready for their next journey – home

Adopted from Burns, Oregon and trained for the 500 Miles Project film, these mustangs began their journey at Heroes and Horses carrying veterans across 500 miles of unforgiving terrain. They have continued to shoulder the weight of veterans undergoing transformational healing through the 41-Day Program, ridden for hundreds of hours and over hundreds of miles.  These two extraordinary mustangs are ready to transition to a home of their own.

They are not just horses.

They are living symbols of perseverance, purpose, and a return to self.

These two mustangs carried riders across New Mexico and Arizona in 500 Miles, a short film that follows the un-purposed veteran and wild, un-purposed horses as they discover healing through challenge. Together, they faced physical exhaustion, emotional resistance, and the raw reality of struggle.  They forged trust, resilience, and meaning hoof by hoof across the desert. And yes, they’ve got a little Hollywood in them.

Through the program, these mustangs have become powerful mirrors and teachers, helping participants regulate their nervous systems, rebuild trust, and rediscover their own sovereignty.

Now, their work on the Double H Ranch is complete.

It is time for them to retire from their service here and step into a new chapter, one defined by partnership and belonging.

By welcoming one of these mustangs into your life, you are not simply adopting a horse. You are carrying forward a legacy of healing and purpose.

Their journey doesn’t end here – it continues with you.

Meet Audi

Audi is a 2014 grey mustang gelding from Burns, Oregon who has been part of the Heroes and Horses herd since 2017. A very athletic 12-year-old mustang, Audi still has many miles and years of partnership ahead of him. He has played a pivotal role in veterans’ transformations during their time in the H&H program and is now ready to find his partner. His service has been a gift to this organization and to the riders whose lives he has touched.

Audi is 100% sound.  He is equally comfortable in the arena or wilderness and has been used extensively to rope, work cows, lead pack strings, and trail ride in the roughest Montana backcountry. He does well on a highline or when hobbled, loads easily, leads quietly, and will stand tied patiently for hours. He is a mustang with a big personality and asks for trust before giving himself fully to any partnership. For this reason, we recommend an experienced horse home. He has learned a few clever tricks over the years to avoid work with beginner riders, but in the hands of someone with experience, he is an exceptional and capable mount.

He began as a part of the Heroes and Horses 500 Miles Project and has given the last nine years to many veterans.  It is time for him to move into the next phase of his life and give himself completely to one person or family. Nothing but an exceptional home will do!

Audi has lived a life of loving sacrifice and partnership in service to healing the invisible wounds of combat veterans. We are asking $15,000 for him. Please click “Come Home” below to email us for video, or for serious inquiries, to arrange a visit.

Meet Uh-Oh

Uh-Oh is a 2014 bay mustang gelding who joined Heroes and Horses in 2017 from Burns, Oregon for the 500 Miles Project. He is the purest expression of the loving sacrifice a horse can offer. Over nine seasons, he has become one of the most trusted and reliable members of our herd, carrying combat veterans as they learn to ride, rope, pack, and navigate the rugged mountains of the American West while redefining their relationship with themselves.

Uh-Oh is the definition of a family horse. Exceptionally well-rounded, he has been roped off of, used to gather cattle, and ridden hundreds of miles in the backcountry leading pack strings through demanding terrain. With his long stride, steady mind, and generous nature, he consistently takes care of his rider, even in the most challenging conditions. He loads and trailers easily, stands tied patiently, is excellent with his feet, and has spent countless nights on a highline or hobbled. He has kindly partnered with many beginner riders, offering nothing but steadiness, patience, and heart. We truly cannot say enough about this horse.

After nine years of service to Heroes and Horses and the veterans we serve, Uh-Oh has more than earned his next chapter. We are seeking an exceptional home where he can belong fully to one person or family who will honor the depth of what he gives. Nothing less will do!

Uh-Oh is offered for sale at $25,000. Please click “Come Home” below to email us for video, or for serious inquiries, to arrange a visit.
